Apple releases 10.5.2

Apple has released the 10.5.2 update. Hopefully this will fix the AirDisk problem I’ve been experiencing. Currently downloading it now. If you don’t see any updates in a while - I think you know what that means.
So if you own a Mac running Leopard - grab that update !

UPDATE: 10.5.2 has been installed, MacBook rebooted, and applied the graphics update after the reboot. My AirDisk actually seems to be functioning as advertised, except it doesn’t seem to be able to be used as a Time Machine backup disk.. .. oh well I guess.

Apple releases 10.5.2: “

Apple has just released 10.5.2 via Software Update.

There are a slew of changes/fixes, some of which are:

  • Improved Airport connection reliability and stability
  • Improved Dashboard widget performance
  • Updated Stacks with a List view option, a Folder view option, and an updated background for Grid view
  • Ability to turn off transparency of menu bar
  • Reduction in overall menu transparency
  • Adds a menu bar option for accessing Time Machine features

The big one that most people will be excited about is the ability to turn off transparency in the menu bar.

Microsoft Helps Nab $900M Piracy Ring

Near-perfect knockoffs of 21 different Microsoft programs began surfacing around the world just over a decade ago. Soon, PCs in more than a dozen countries were running illegal copies of Windows and Office, turning unwitting consumers into criminals and, Microsoft says, exposing them to increased risk of malicious viruses and spyware.

And here I thought Windows was a virus. Who thought that it just exposed people to viruses, well the illegal copies of the software does according to Microsoft. Learn something new everyday. Nothing to worry about though, we all run legit copies of software, so we don’t have to concern ourselves right ?

Microsoft Helps Nab $900M Piracy Ring: “Microsoft is telling the tale of a major software piracy investigation that weaved through 22 countries, hoping would-be pirates will think twice if they know how far the company will go…”

Send Huge Files to Your Friends with Pando

This actually seems like a good idea. Although the people using the service have to each have the desktop client to send or retrieve the file(s). Good news is that it’s free, the other side of that coin is that you have to deal with ads in the client. Everyone has to eat.

Send Huge Files to Your Friends with Pando: “What if the files you want to share are too big to fit in an e-mail? The free desktop client Pando lets you share files up to one gigabyte in size with anyone.

Win a Tide-themed iPod

Title says it all. Can’t win if you don’t play .. .. or something like that

Win a Tide-themed iPod: “

If you watched last weekend’s Super Bowl (the height of American Football), you probably saw Tide’s ‘Talking Stain’ ad. It was one of the better ones; a man trying to conduct an interview is distracted by a nagging stain on the interviewee’s shirt.

Today, Tide has launched a contest encouraging people to make their own ‘mocking stain’ ads. Among the prizes are 34 limited edition Tide-themed iPod Classics. The size isn’t listed, but they’re described in the official rules as having a value of $300US, so we assume it’s the 80GB model.

Apple increases iPhone, iPod touch storage capacity

You wanted an iPhone an iPod Touch, but wanted more storage then what was originally offered ? The great and almighty Apple Computer has answered your request.

Apple increases iPhone, iPod touch storage capacity: “

After a brief downtime, the US Apple Store came back online this morning with updated, larger-capacity iPhone and iPod touch models. Our colleagues at Engadget called this update about five hours before it hit the street.

The iPhone is now available with 8GB (at $399US) or 16GB (at $499US) of storage. The iPod touch is now available in three models; 8GB ($299US), 16GB($399US) and 32GB($499US). Note that the 16GB iPhone and the 32GB iPod touch are both $499, while there’s a one hundred dollar difference between the 16GB iPhone and the 16GB iPod model.

I guess your hundred bucks either buys you a phone or double the storage space. The choice is yours.

[Nik notes from across the pond: the 16 GB iPhone is available in the UK for £329, and the 32GB iPod touch is also £329 (inc VAT).]

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!
